He was a naval architect in charge of designing and knowing every detail of the company’s ship construction.

He became Managing Director of Harland and Wolff, a shipbuilding company based in Belfast, whose owners were the White Star Line.

According to Titanic Facts, International Mercantile Marine Co. (IMM) is the parent company of White Star Line.

The chairman of White Star Line is English-born Joseph Bruce Ismay, while JP Morgan is the financier from the United States (US).

According to the Titanic Encyclopedia, Thomas Andrews was born at Ardara House, Comber, Northern Ireland on February 7 1873.

Andrews entered the Royal Belfast Academical Institution in 1884. However, aged 16 he left school and entered the shipbuilding firm Harland and Wolff as an apprentice, and gradually rose through the various departments.

He became a member of the Institution of Naval Architects in 1901. Then, Andrews married Helen Reilly Barbour on June 24, 1908.

Furthermore, 2 years later the couple was blessed with a daughter named Elizabeth. They lived at Dunallon, 20 Windsor Avenue, Belfast.

Andrews decided to sail with a team of mechanics on his maiden voyage in the Adriatic, Oceanic Sea to recommend improvements to a future ship his company was scheduled to build.

That was the reason why Andrews planned to sail on the Titanic’s maiden voyage to the US and he left his wife and daughter in Belfast.

Based on his last letter, Andrews expressed his satisfaction with the new ship Titanic.

Titanic is now almost finished and I think it will do the old company credit tomorrow when we sail,” he said.

He spent most of his voyage at sea taking notes and assisting the crew as they became acquainted with the new ship.

Andrews departed as a first class passenger on the Titanic with ticket number 112050. The Titanic hit an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, on the evening of April 14, 1912.

He barely noticed the collision and was unaware of any trouble until Captain Smith sent a message requesting his immediate presence on the bridge.

First class cabin boy on the ship, Saloon Steward James Johnstone described the moment he saw Andrews and Captain Smith making their rounds at the front of the ship.

They visited the squash hall and courts which also quickly filled with water.

Returning to the bridge, Andrews broke the news to Captain Smith that considering the damage the ship had suffered, he did not expect to survive more than 2 hours.

During the ship’s final hours, Andrews roamed the deck encouraging passengers to wear seat belts and make their way to the spare boat.
