The beginning of discovery

His childhood education was only in local schools. After that, he helped in his father’s workshop. There, he received guidance to find useful tools in the agricultural sector.

In the early 19th century, harvesting required large numbers of workers. Apart from the large scope of agricultural areas, costs are the main focus in this problem.

Therefore, Cyrus McCormick’s father tried to make a harvest tool that was practical and faster. Various concepts were created, but they did not comply with predetermined standards.

Starting from failure, this project was finally given to McCormick by his father. His task is to be able to complete this challenge from his father.

In 1831, Cyrus McCormick tried to make a reaper. This tool was pulled by horses and used a type of rotating gear. This tool is engine powered.

When tested on neighboring fields, this tool offers hope that farmers will have more freedom and will not need as many workers to harvest.

However, at that time this machine was not perfect. The sound produced is so loud that it frightens the horse. One of them had to stand guard and keep the horse calm while the machine was running.

McCormick had to improve his invention and immediately patent it so that other inventors would not claim it. After receiving the patent, he abandoned the invention and focused on the family’s iron foundry.

Shortly after the foundry business failed, he returned again to the reaper. He managed to sell two machines in 1941. Until 1943, he managed to sell around 36 reapers.

Global promotion

Not only selling regionally, McCormick also promotes his tools to various states. He also collaborated with several local officials to build a factory for making agricultural equipment.

In 1847, about 800 machines were sold. To increase sales, it uses innovations such as advertising, public demonstrations, product warranties, and extending credit to its customers.

This tool is also sold to various countries in the world. He even received the Grand Medal of Honor at the Paris International Exposition. There the McCormick reaper became known to farmers throughout the world.
