Get to know Willis Carrier, the inventor of modern AC who is called the ‘Father of Air Conditioning’ – Willis Carrier, or with the full name Willis Havilanf Carrier, was an American inventor and industrialist who formulated a theory about the basics of air conditioning .

He was born on November 26, 1876 in Angola, New York, United States and died in New York City on October 7, 1950. Carrier in his youth received his education at the Angola Academy. The higher education he entered with a scholarship was Cornell University. Next he graduated from Cornell in June 1901 with a major in Electrical Engineering.
Carrier designed the first system to control temperature and humidity in 1902, when he was an engineer at the Buffalo Forge Company. In 1911, he introduced in an engineering paper a “ Rational Psychometric Formula” to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers . That is what pioneered the scientific design of air conditioners.
The work he did at Buffalo Forge was not just theoretical, there he put his concepts into practice. Initially he designed a system that could maintain 55 percent humidity in buildings throughout the year with a temperature of 70 degrees in winter, and 80 degrees in summer for the Sackett – Wilhelm Lithography and Publishing Company.
The system that Carrier created in 1907 has been installed in several cotton mills and other factories. Based on what he had done, Buffalo Forge finally established a wholly owned subsidiary of Carrier Air Conditioning Company. This aims to engineer and market complete air conditioning systems.
Carrier became vice president of the subsidiary as well as the parent company’s chief engineer and director of research for the next six years. During that time, Carrie’s equipment was installed in several industries such as tobacco, rayon, rubber, paper, pharmaceuticals and beverage processing.

This is what makes Carrier known as the “Father of Air Conditioning” in America theoretically and practically. Carriers were able to quickly adopt the term “air conditioning” first used by Stuart W. Cramer , a Charlotte, North Carolina, plant owner and operator.

He defines air conditioning as controlling humidity in the air, temperature, as well as purity and circulation. Until 1914, Buffalo Forge restricted and withdrew from manufacturing and engineering businesses, so that in 1915 Carrier founded Carrier Engineering Corporation, a manufacturer of air conditioning equipment. He also made a discovery that could change the industry by developing a radical new refrigeration machine that was safe and non-toxic. Apart from that, he also serves large installations at low prices. This paves the way for a system that aims for human comfort.
