HISTORY OF THE INVENTION OF THE HYDRAULIC JACK –Hello fellow Indonesian technicians , as we all know, all the items we have today definitely have a history. Especially the history related to its creation or manufacture. So in our article this time, we want to share the history of the discovery of the first hydraulic jack. Of course, there is an interesting story that you can get from this article later.
But before we get into it, I want to give you an intro about this jack itself. So the definition of a hydraulic jack is a lifting tool that uses a hydraulic system. The hydraulic system itself is a system that uses the help of liquid or fluids that press and produce thrust. That push is what allows objects to be lifted to the limit of the jack.
EARLY HISTORY OF THE INVENTION OF THE HYDRAULIC JACK
So the invention of the hydraulic jack itself was originally made and discovered around 2 centuries ago. But instead of directly using a hydraulic system, it is still manual. Manual here means using a system like a screw that moves up and down.
Of course, the screw system will be very dangerous if used for lifting heavy loads. For this reason, jack researchers are working hard to find ways so that jacks can lift heavy loads safely.
The first discovery of the hydraulic jack was by a researcher named William Joseph Curtis in 1838. But this discovery is not yet included in the perfect category, because the jack created was very large. So it is not flexible and difficult to move.
Then in 1851 the shape of this jack was finally made more compact so that it was more flexible to use. And in this year, the hydraulic jack itself began to be named.
INITIAL FUNCTION OF THE HYDRAULIC JACK
As we now know, there are many functions of a jack. Starting from lifting damaged vehicles so they can be repaired, lifting vehicles so they can be washed, for factory needs, and so on. But it turns out that when the hydraulic jack was first created, its function was different, unlike now.
Why is that?? because in the past cars and trucks were not like they are now. So in the past, jacks were used more in the construction and elevator sectors. We don’t really understand how to use it, because it’s really old. Haha
DEVELOPMENT OF HYDRAULIC JACKS
So, back to 1851, because the shape of the jack was perfected. So Frank Gormley began to perfect it again into a better and simpler form in 1905. From here the hydraulic jack began to receive acceptance and attention from the public.
Seeing this, Frank patented his jack and called it Hydraulic Jack technology. Frank’s jack is small in size but can lift up to thousands of kilograms. This of course makes jack manufacturers who still use old technology become unsteady or go bankrupt.
Year after year Frank Gormley continued to perfect his jacks until he became one of the most successful hydraulic jack manufacturers of his time. However, success did not last long because at that time the First World War occurred.
This of course shook the world economy and weakened Frank’s production at that time. But even so, Frank did not give up and started again what he had done. His determination and persistence is what makes the hydraulic jack exist today.
