Grasscutter

GrasscutterIn the 18th and 19th centuries, English estates usually had green fields or pastures which were naturally mowed by goats or scythes when they became overgrown. With the growth of rural areas outside London connected by rail or horse-drawn carriages in the late 18th century, the increasingly smaller size of houses began to emulate the scenic style of manor houses, with green lawns giving way to the brick or paved courtyards that were a feature of the city in at that time. The growing market share of mechanical trimmers was recognized by several inventors.

One of the first patents was owned by Thomas Plucknett in 1805, using a pair of horse-drawn carriage gears to rotate a large circular blade close to the ground. In 1830 Edwin Budding developed a device which was the forerunner of the modern lawnmower. Pushed by one person, the tool has two pairs of toothed wheels to rotate the cutting blade which throws the cut into a kind of tray or wooden box. Budding stated that the machine’s purpose was not only to allow villagers to mow their fields but also to provide a form of health exercise.

In 1832, the Ipswich company, Ransome, obtained Budding’s patent and began marketing improved models, some of which used serrations to move the knife in the same circular motion as a wheel and to throw the cut into a basket at the back. However, Budding’s design based on a toothed wheel remained the type of hand-driven mower for a century.

Steam-powered lawn mowers for large homes were sold in 1893, and in 1900, Ransome introduced a gasoline internal combustion engine model, equipped with a seat for the operator and a large cutting port. A pair of lawn mowers, with double blades at the rear of the engine were first introduced in the United States in 1914.
