Ada Harris, inventor of the hair straightener since 1893 – JAKARTA – Ada Harris is the inventor of a hair straightener from Indianapolis, Marian area, Indiana State. Harris’s invention is different from other hair straighteners, his invention is flat which is held together with a hinge and has a toothed part to separate the hair when you want to straighten it.
Harris was born in Kentucky in 1870. He moved to Indianapolis with his mother, Anna Toliver when he was a child. When he was 18 years old, with a high school degree in his possession, he became a school teacher.
Reporting from Racked , Harris’s many discoveries regarding hair straighteners are still developing. Harris said that his invention was related to hair straighteners aimed at straightening curly hair, especially services for straightening the hair of black people.
Harris invented the hair straightener in 1893 and the following year he applied for a patent. The invention is very similar to tweezers in that they have a handle that hinges in the middle so that users can clamp simultaneously.
In 1894 Harris took his prototype across the country from his home to the California Midwinter International Exposition. It was a famous world exhibition tour. There he showed his invention in a booth and looked for investors to support his project or companies who wanted to buy it.
Until finally his discovery has now become a work and legacy in modern times. Her interest in hair straighteners may change over time.
Since filing his patent, Harris has focused more on community service. He moved to the Noorwood neighborhood where he taught. He founded a boys’ club in 1905 after raising a lot of money.
As the Indianapolis Star wrote in 1990 in an article about the neighborhood’s revitalization “Harris is busy fulfilling his ambitions.”
In 1912 he led the society and taught at the Corinthians church officers’ state school. By 1914 Harris’ club had 300 members who would later join the NAACP branch in Indianapolis, the only branch in the country, where women held leadership positions.
Harris was one of three women who founded the Idle Hands Needle Club as Dr. Earline Rae Ferguson wrote in the book Moving Forward: Black Women in Africa and America. Harris was an Indianapolis Freeman, where in 1890 she was one of the few women riding a bicycle .
Madam Walker
Apart from Ada Harris, Madam CJ Walker is also famous as the woman who created the first hair straightening formula and hot comb. Madam CJ Walker or Sarah Breedlove was born in 1867.
